New laws in New York
The new year has brought big changes to the laws of New York. Governor Kathy Hochul signed 730 new bills into law, including raising the minimum wage in NYC, Westchester and Long Island to $16 per hour. Another bill, dubbed “Matthew’s Law,” makes drug testing resources more available to the public in an effort to decrease the chance of accidental fentanyl or other drug overdoses.
There are also new laws aimed at protecting tenants from water and security issues in their buildings. For example, Assembly Bill A7273 requires NYCHA residents to be informed within 24 hours if their water is safe for cooking and drinking. A separate assembly bill, A7306, prevents building owners from installing keyless security access systems without giving tenants a 30-day notice. These and other changes come into effect January 1.
