Entertaiment is about the pleasures and gratifications arising from recreation, play, games, social interaction and performance. It involves a wide range of activities, from an individual selecting music, food or television for personal entertainment to a family gathering or banquet prepared and served by professionals to performances intended for thousands and even global audiences. Entertainment is also about the way familiar themes, images and structures cross over into different media. For example, the story of Scheherazade – from the Persian professional storytelling tradition – has been told through music (by Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski), film (Pasolini’s adaptation) and innovative video games.
