The Yale Daily News, the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper, serves the Yale and New Haven communities. The paper publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year, with a Sunday edition called WKND and several special issues, including a Game Day Issue, Commencement Issue and a First Year Issue. The News is also committed to telling stories of marginalized communities, working closely with the University’s cultural centers and affiliated student groups to do so. In the 2020-21 school year, the News will begin publishing its inaugural special issues celebrating the campus’s Indigenous, Black, Latine and Asian American communities.
The Daily News’s editorial stance has varied over the years. The paper initially supported isolationism during World War II, but in the 1970s began shifting to a moderately liberal position. By the 1990s, it was a rival to the right-wing New York Post, and had a high-minded, but populist legacy.
Amid declining circulation in the 2000s, the newspaper expanded into television and radio. The News founded the AM radio station WFAN and bought TV stations WCBS-TV, WPIX and WVIT-TV (now CBS Local). The paper also acquired the rights to the city’s nickname, “New York’s Picture Newspaper,” which it uses as its call letters for cable channels based in the City: WNYW-TV, WPIX-TV, and, since 2014, WFAN-FM.
In addition to its extensive local news coverage, the Daily News also has a wide array of entertainment and sports features. Its website features intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, a huge section for sports and a large opinion section. It is widely regarded as one of the best newspapers in the United States.
Despite the decline in print sales, the New York Daily News has a strong online presence and attracts many readers through its social media pages. The newspaper’s Twitter account has more than 1.1 million followers, and its Facebook page is followed by more than 250,000 people. The Daily News’s website receives over 20 million visits each month.
The newspaper has a wide readership in the United States and internationally. Its website is available in multiple languages, and the newspaper has its own YouTube channel, which features a series of short videos on various topics. The Daily News is also the publisher of a popular magazine, called The New Yorker.
