The Daily News is a morning newspaper in New York City. It is a print and digital news publication that offers readers a range of news stories, features, sports coverage, and opinion. In addition to its print and digital products, it also has a radio station.
The paper focuses on breaking news, but also covers business, features, and investigative reporting. It also includes classified ads and comics, and prominent photographs for entertainment and sports. There is a digital interactive version of the paper available on computers and mobile devices. Users can share articles via email or by swiping between pages.
The paper has a long history. Originally called the Illustrated Daily News, it was founded in 1919. This early newspaper attracted readers with lurid photographs and sensational crime coverage. By 1930, the newspaper had a circulation of 1.5 million copies. From that point, the Daily News became a leading tabloid in the U.S. It is now published by Tribune Publishing.
A number of people have worked at the Daily News throughout its long history. Many of them have gone on to careers in journalism and public life. Some of them have won awards for their work. Others have been recognized for their contributions to the paper.
One of the more famous members of the Daily News’s editorial staff was John York. He spent most of his career working in San Diego. At one time, he sat on a bench in the paper’s lobby. Another famous member of the News was Jimmy Cannon, a boxing writer. When the paper moved from its former headquarters on East 42nd Street to another on West 33rd Street, Cannon sat on the bench.
Today, the paper maintains local bureaus in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The newspaper is also widely read in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
Although the Daily News has suffered from financial trouble for years, it continues to be a successful, well-respected publication. While the paper was owned by a company called Independent Media, it is still very much independent in its reporting. Several of its staff members have recently been promoted. However, a series of layoffs has put the paper’s future in jeopardy.
Since its founding, the Daily News has won eleven Pulitzer Prizes. It is considered to be a moderate liberal alternative to the right-wing Post. In fact, the paper has been characterized as “flexibly centrist” by the New York Times.
Many of the Daily News’s mainstays have sat on that bench over the years. Some of them have gone on to prominent careers in the press. They have included former editor in chief Jim Rich, who stepped down from the position in 2007. Other key Daily News executives include Clifford Ross, who is the paper’s executive director. Among other things, Ross covered the state legislature and the Amsterdam News. Previously, he was the deputy executive director of Human Rights Watch in New York.
As of 2016, the Daily News had a circulation of 200,000. The newspaper was purchased by Tribune Publishing in 2017, but is now in the process of closing its Lower Manhattan office.
