A daily news is a publication that is published on a regular basis and contains news and information about current events that are of interest to the general public. A well-known example of a daily news is The New York Times, which is a newspaper that is published each day and covers a wide range of topics. The term daily news can also refer to an online publication that is updated on a regular basis and contains the latest news.
The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson in New York City. It was one of the first successful tabloids and was once the highest-circulation newspaper in the United States. Its sensational crime and celebrity coverage, lurid photographs, and cartoons helped attract readers.
Despite the popularity of the tabloid, it struggled to compete with its more sophisticated rival, the New York Post. Eventually, the Daily News was forced to cut staff and reduce its circulation. Its headquarters, located at 450 West 33rd Street in Manhattan, straddled the railroad tracks that led into Pennsylvania Station.
In the 1920s, the Daily News found abundant subject matter, including political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome scandal and social intrigue like the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. It was also an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a large staff of photographers.
The paper also covered international stories such as the rise of Adolf Hitler, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and the Spanish Civil War. In addition, it covered sports, entertainment, and local news.
By the end of the 1920s, the Daily News had become one of America’s most popular newspapers. In its heyday, it had a circulation of over 200,000 and was widely regarded as one of the best American dailies in the world.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many cities across the United States had daily papers, each covering its own particular region or sector of the economy. During this time, there were also several major national newspapers, such as the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The Daily News was a competitor with these national newspapers, and the two often fought for readers and advertising revenue.
Each Daily News article includes comprehension and critical thinking questions, as well as “Background” and “Resources” (including videos, maps and links) to help students understand the story. This helps them develop their understanding of the issue and come to their own conclusions. The questions are available in both English and Spanish.
